A 5 Minute Me. - Day 23

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

DAY TWENTY THREE RESULTS:

Face Shape: Pretty good. If anything, it could be a little bit longer.

Eyes: The left eye doesn’t actually look half bad in terms of size and location, but the execution is poor. The right eye just isn’t right at all and clearly isn’t drawn well.

Nose: It’s a pretty good nose, it’s just not my nose. It’s too big in terms of scale, but is pretty well drawn.

Mouth: Uh. Yeah.

Details: The nose carries the bulk of the detail here, and unfortunately it’s close to no detail at all.

Final Thoughts: I actually felt really comfortable when this illustration started, especially after finishing getting the left eye penciled in. But then there’s a sense of hesitation that’s been coming over me when I get to the right eye and also the nose, and I start to slow down and get very apprehensive. This is crazy. It’s been a week since I cut my hair and all of the drawings have been shit ever since. I don’t know what to do to get out of this funk, but I’m gonna need to make it happen soon, or else the last 2 weeks of this project are going to be a joke on the illustration front.

DAY TWENTY THREE PIECE:
Generally Opposed To. (written in 5mins 00secs)

I’d bet you weren’t listening close,
your vision is closed and you’re missing the point.
My system of sharing is candid and grand
but morbid and standing at graves with a joint.

If you can’t be of assistance at least give him a hand,
CLAP CLAP.
I’ll curtsy curtsy as a courtesy stance.
I’ve been known to not take shorts…
I’ll probably murder these pants.

I remember P taking on a whole
herd in a van saying,

“Look.. all they left was a scratch”.

If you were lighter you wouldn’t be a good match.

A 5 Minute Me. - Day 22

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

DAY TWENTY TWO RESULTS:

Face Shape: Too long and very robotic. My face from the front is very angular, but this is over the top angular. I look like a transformer.

Eyes: I only got to one, and if I was a cyclops I’d still be unimpressed by the illustration of that one eye. It looks way too small and a tad too high, and I’m clearly becoming more and more frazzled by the decline in my ability to tackle these drawings.

Nose: The nostril size is pretty bang on, but obviously I didn’t get to much else of the details.

Mouth: The lower lip shouldn’t be bigger than the upper lip. That’s just not the way my mouth looks. Also, the edges of the lower lip go too far out. This is an embarrassing effort at drawing my mouth.

Details: N/A.

Final Thoughts: I’m starting to get frustrated with my inability to draw myself after shaving my head. I know that it sounds silly, but if you go back to the first day I cut my hair, it’s the most raw, the most emotional, the most personal, and also the most impressive illustration I’ve done for the 5 Minute Me. After that day, which I believe was Day 17, I have been on a clear decline. I’m thinking too much and I never enjoy the drawing aspect of this project anymore. I’m basically just waiting to be done. I wish the progress kept going, but that’s the nature of doing something like this I guess. You don’t know what the results are gonna be and you have to stick to it. I hope that the drop in the quality of the drawings hasn’t affected the writing too much from the outsiders perspective.

DAY TWENTY TWO PIECE:
Escapism. (written in 4mins 43secs)

Escapism,
like I’ve stayed sitting in place and ran
hands on my face
and standing almost half of the way to the sand,
seeing a shore.

I know in stroke
my being is more.

But I’m not one for a swim.

So unlike him this is never a sea I’d explore.

I seal it in stone.

Etch a house from a meaningless home,
dug from a pail,
and put a slug in the mug of a snail.

I move too fast.

Looking for the right place to have left.

Searching on maps,
’til I find that chest dug up under my “X”.

Shad: Brother (Watching)

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

I was put onto Shad by my homey G, my homey Che, my homey Mensa, my homey Jesse, etc, etc, etc… too many people, on me about how dope this cat was. Then one night I went to go see him perform and was blown away. He is talented in a way that makes me miss the emcees of old, and humble in a way that makes me think he misses them too.

Thanks to The And Theory for inspiring this post.
