I love it.

I love the change in tempo and intensity in the words, the interpretations of the mundane things we do to avoid our necessary tasks, and the close.

I’m so glad I saw this today.

The other morning I woke up to a text message from my lil bro in California saying I gotta see this Lo Hecho Esta Hecho video by Shakira. Normally I’d be pissed off waking up to anything involving Shakira since I think she’s terribly unattractive and listening to her voice is like having your genitals massaged with sandpaper and bathed in rubbing alcohol, but he said Cloud was in the video, so I had to check it out.

Pretty dope choreography makes something ridiculously annoying pretty bearable.
Shout out to Cloud and Skill Methodz. First Madonna, now Shakira. Homey’s been doing his thing. Maybe one day I’ll show the illustration I did of him in high school.

I want to be known as an expressive artist, but I also want to be respected as an intelligent designer. Yesterday I was told by the executive creative director at a well respected agency that I clearly had something going on in my brain that allowed me to be the artist I am with such breadth, but needed what all schooled designers have in a knowledge for the design process to be able to defend those talents against anyone and to make sure that “nobody could say shit” to me about my work. He recommended books. I bought them. He gave me great compliments. I humbly thanked him. And I left feeling determined.

I have spoken on a number of occasions about my thoughts on being lucky. These thoughts are shared on equal parallels by Marcus Troy, who said to me the other day, “I work very hard at being lucky”. I agree. To put it simply, my feelings are these:

Exceed need and you will create your own luck.

Fuck “luck”. It doesn’t exist. Not in my world at least. This design was my finest effort at playing with these two words. I am proud of it to the same extent that I am proud of my illustrations. I am growing as an artist. I am learning. I am changing and evolving. And I am feeling very motivated.

Although I do not feel “lucky”, I do feel fortunate. That will never change.

I came to a realization today that I’m not in search of anything but to be found. All I want is to be understood and appreciated. I’m sure it’s the goal of a lot of people, but the way I felt about saying this out loud was very strong. I’m not gonna explain this too much. Really, I just needed to solidify the thought somehow.

Bryan Espiritu: Self Portrait
January 13.10

Here’s a self portrait I started working on last night while waiting to be picked up by my homies Will and Vince. I was basically finished last night but they were at my door so I had to leave posting it until today. I added a little more texture and some refinement this morning, but that’s about it.

I draw directly into Photoshop with a Wacom tablet using different brushes. There’s no tracing done and the reference photo is left open on a separate window off to the side. This took me about an hour but I had fun with it. I hope you guys like it.
