Design: Blame Game
Original Release: 2010
Vault Series Release: New colourway.
Collection/Series:
“Blame Game” was originally part of a 2010 “WAR” collection I had designed consisting of 6 graphics questioning the concept of war. Along with “War Ain’t Over” it was one of only 2 of the designs I actually released.
Influence/Concept:
As the war in Iraq began, the hunt for Osama Bin Laden ensued and the recession continued to crash our economic structure, those in power childishly continued to veer focus from responsibility to excuses; from being held accountable for mistakes to being grossly self entitled. The world was crumbling and nobody was to blame.
I had purchased a bag of toy soldiers for another graphic from the “WAR” collection I was working on and saw that it had a soldier pointing. I immediately thought of the concept of soldiers in a circle blaming each other, taking the context away from one figure with his hand pointing out in a moment of leadership and putting them into a childish scenario that screamed, “I didn’t do it. It was his fault”.
Sidebar: This is easily one of my favourite graphics to date.
Critical Breakdown:
When questions need to be answered and accountability hovers around those who claim to be leaders, when the barriers begin to crumble and responsibility for the crash seems to land nowhere but in helpless laps, the ashamed will point their fingers while the shepherds will play their role.
If we claim the privilege of all fairness in love and war, we must carry the pressure of both love and wars falls.
If you don’t know, now you almost know.

Design: War Ain’t Over
Original Release: 2010
Vault Series Release: New colourway.
Collection/Series:
“War Ain’t Over” was originally part of a 2010 “WAR” collection I had designed consisting of 6 graphics questioning the concept of war. Along with “Blame Game” it was one of only 2 of the designs I actually released.
Influence/Concept:
When Barack Obama was elected President in 2008, I openly supported him and what he stood for through 2 graphic tees – “Obama’s Time” and “Obamatomically”. While I still support what he stands for I am not blind to the reality of political promise versus real life follow through nor will I be silent in questioning the words and intentions of someone I support.
In a televised speech to Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, I watched as President Obama stated, “Let me say this as plainly as I can: By Aug. 31, 2010, our combat mission in Iraq will end”. I immediately thought of the iconic image of Yoko Ono and John Lennon holding a War Is Over poster to protest the Vietnam war. The idea was simple but the layers spoke volumes. Iraq is our generations Vietnam. The war is definitely not over. And promises, no matter how much you support who they come from, need to be believed in whole only when the words are matched by action.
Critical Breakdown:
Those that inspire draw crowds with words. Those that lead crowds gain trust through action. In February of 2009, Barack Obama explained that he would bring a close to the war in Iraq. In his explanation he stated that “by Aug. 31, 2010, our combat mission in Iraq will end”.
As of August 2012, the war in Iraq is still not over.
The graphic of Yoko Ono and John Lennon holding the “War Is Over If You Want It” poster is an iconic image of their protest against the Vietnam war. Repurposing this image to question the promise that the war would end soon after August 2010, “War Ain’t Over” stands as our generations protest to what has become our Vietnam and to stand as an iconic image representative of our right to speak up and question those who lead us in war and peace.
The voice of one can lead a crowd of plenty. The voice of many can change the actions of all.
If you don’t know, now you almost know.
