Hip-Hop, Life and “What are you gonna do?”
by be.
I heard once that when you’re an active member of the Hip-Hop community as an MC, DJ, Graffiti Writer, B-Boy, etc, you ARE Hip-Hop. You become your craft. You embody the culture. Naturally, we grow to be protective of our creations and become competitive members of the community; wanting to be the very best in our respective fields. Our actions then translate into the question, “What are you gonna do?”. And this is the essence of battling.
A b-boy can enter a cypher and not cause static with any other dancer but his actions alone pose the question to every dancer watching. Their reactions are the subsequent answers to that question and continue a cycle of creativity that propels the culture. It’s a beautiful, innate and silent knowledge and understanding that anyone fortunate enough to be actively involved in any of Hip-Hop’s core elements can relate to.
But it’s a sentiment that translates well into all of our lives.
I always say that discipline is a yes or no question answered a thousand times a day. Sometimes it’s the “What are you gonna do” that just motivates that discipline a little bit more.
