Me and Richie have been in talks for a minute about working on a logo for him, and in the process, I’ve come up with a bunch of designs that we reviewed and passed on. Something was always kind of missing. He’s a very particular kind of individual. His personality is huge and his work reflects that. He’s never on some soft shit, but he’s talented enough to communicate on some smooth shit in his music, both lyrically and with the beats. My goal was to get the gritty side of his personality out in a typeform, and we went through a ton of executions – all of them just not quite right. But after listening to his latest mixtape I decided I wanted to bring it back to the Def Jam days of artist branding and logos. They were strong images that were a throwback to the “hardcore rap” era when the general public just didn’t fully understand what hip-hop was about yet.

The typeface is completely original and drawn from scratch for this particular project. I wanted to create something very bold and sturdy with sharp edges that I could fit into a strong stacked composition that could also be effectively used in a single line.
