Fully Wholly: Disney Collection
(Because The Kids Don’t Play)
This collection of Whollys is based on the loss of innocence. It’s based on our neglect for the children around us, and how many of my generations childhood experiences so differ from those of the youth growing up today. I wanted to take the most recognizable children’s icons and create awkward, intriguing, and somewhat disturbing juxtapositions to a poem that I wrote to accompany the set.
The accompanying poem goes as follows:
Because The Kids Don’t Play
Because the kids don’t play,
We’ll bomb the slide.
No knees that bleed,
Nor heart inside.Because the kids don’t laugh,
We’ll hold the joke,
Withholding hope
With a loop & rope.Because the kids don’t love,
We’ll let them fuck.
And show them what is
Just enough.Because the kids don’t fly,
We’ll make them sink.
Their growth ignored,
Explored to shrink.Because the kids don’t live,
We’ll let it die.
Our joy destroyed by foolish pride.
Our souls devoid of a need to cry;
Of love & such,
Denied.- Bryan Espiritu.
Enjoy. And please, if you blog them, give appropriate credit.
Love&Respect,
be.

What’s a Wholly?
A “Wholly” is a stylized character who is composed of a base or shell that generally has 4 holes in it. Those 4 holes provide me with endless possibilities to solving graphic problems. I use the base or shell as a canvas to create the character, and the holes to act as ports to extensions of the character.

I’ve worked incredibly hard on this collection, and I find it ironic that I completed it on the day of passing of a Legend in the entertainment industry, the late, Michael Jackson. For many of us he was an icon for allowing your craft to reflect your pain and energy. He was a leader in a push for innovation and creativity. He was a pioneer in the fight for expression and originality, and has influenced so many people globally. His music resonates thoughts and memories throughout all of my life, starting in my family’s first apartment in Parkdale, to listening to Dangerous in my mother’s living room, doing a performance with 3 other dancers in my high school fashion show to Smooth Criminal, and later, trying to comprehend the mentality of a man under so much pressure and fire for almost his entire life. It is unfortunate, but in his passing, the incredible work he was able to achieve will be further celebrated and recognized to the extent that it always deserved to be.

This set is really mind blowing.
I’m truly amazed by your creativity. the mickey mouse one is my favourite.
Eh Derek, I appreciate the repost homey. Reading what you wrote and seeing that you’ve taken some interest in what I do is inspiring and motivating dude. Keep doing your thing.
I love this
way more than the other fully whollys too.
keep it up.
I thought Disney was notorious about trade mark control… you concerned in anyway?
A friend of mine brought up the same concerns about Disney Trademarks, etc.
My thoughts on that are pretty simple.
The Wholly’s are the characters, not Minnie, Mickey, Goofy, or Donald. They’re each distinguished by the inverted heart noses, and I zoom in on them in the detail pics. Obviously the resemblance to the Disney characters was intentional, but my goal in creating these characters was to make immediate connections for my viewers using shapes and objects that aren’t normally seen in their place. I didn’t make a mouse with big black ears. I made a Wholly with 2 arms coming out of 2 holes in the upper half of its shell, holding 2 bombs out, etc. I’m not stupid. And neither is Disney. So if they wanted to cause a stink about these, so be it. But since these pieces are a celebration of my art without any immediate business intentions, I’ll continue to do them as an addition to my means of self expression. Plain and simple.
Thanks for your comments and support, as usual homey.
:D And the hard work plays off. Great job Bryan!
PS: Can’t ever forget about Michael. Ever.
PSS: I’m actually wondering if you’re going to celebrate his life with an illustration.
Keep up the bawsome work!!
All ‘em other Toronto designers out there using Illustrator just hopped into the Humber.
DUUUUUUUUUUDE. I’M AMAZED. You are the fucking man. damn.
I wonder if Walt Disney ever read Catcher in the Rye. This is sick.
Dude these are so messed up its wicked. Just wicked.

RIP MJ
Word. This ish is ill. Elegant in it’s own right. I assure you that I’ve never seen this before and I can see that this type of art can be confused or associated with works by KAWS and such… Extremely motivational and it’s a joy to see that T.O. has some serious skill lurking in the depths of commercial and cheesey bullshit…
