Toronto Legend: Megas aka Vengeance

by be.

Check this ill video of Megas (Toronto) and K-Mel (Bronx from what I remember), both from The Original Boogie Brats Crew, repping in Chicago. This dude was a huge inspiration to myself, my boy Prince Kev, Deadly, Lostyle, and probably every b-boy coming up at that time. He was one of the nastiest natural b-boys Toronto had ever bred, and I remember one year going to Los Angeles and everyone asking me if I knew 3 people – K-os, Dizzy (Supernaturalz Crew), and Megas, far after he had already quit dancing.

Some nasty ass shit..

I went on a little bit of a rant on the original post, but cut and pasted it into the end to humor anyone who’s interested.

If you don’t know who Megas is, chances are you’re not a Toronto Hip-Hop head. I mean, you may be a Toronto head that listens to rap music, but you probably don’t know any of the city’s writers, b-boys and b-girls, djs and emcees from before 2000, if even that.

I can’t hate on you if you were too young to be around, but fuck, we were getting our 11 year old homey from our crew into Kings Towers and shit. We were staying at afterhours spots at 15. So fuck your excuses.

Toronto has had some crazy talent for a long ass time, and the opportunities and the young talent keep getting better. But where’s the idea of “hip-hop” among all of this? This is part of what makes me sick about the state of the ‘hip-hop game’ right now. There used to be solidarity in the culture, even within our city, that’s become more and more of a rarity. And while shows like “So You Think You Can Dance” and “America’s Best Dance Crew” allow for a lot of b-boys/girls to get some shine, it’s unfortunate that much of the recognition that gets gained from programs like these is based on acrobatic moves and blow ups, and not so much on actual b-boy flavor. Even emcees actually freestyling is something that doesn’t happen anymore. It’s ridiculous.

I don’t mean to go on a rant, but honestly, the shit we post at The Meaning Of Dope is from an era that we’ll never, ever see again, and it’s a fucking shame.

smh.
